Masseto

Masseto was born on the Tuscan coast in the early 1980s, when Merlot was planted on a west-facing hillside near Bolgheri despite local convention favoring other varieties. The first vintage came in 1986, and the wine took its name from the rock-hard clods of blue clay — the “massi” — that appear across the vineyard.

The site looks toward the Tyrrhenian Sea and is defined by a vein of ancient Pliocene blue clay, once seabed, now threaded with minerals and marine fossils. Sea light, coastal breezes and the clay’s ability to hold moisture all shape the vineyard, creating a place where Merlot develops both concentration and freshness.

Masseto’s philosophy is intentionally restrained: precise vineyard work, strict selection and minimal intervention in the cellar. The winery itself is built into the hillside and designed around gravity flow, reinforcing the estate’s central idea that the wine should be guided rather than forced.
