Château Pontet-Canet

Château Pontet-Canet traces its origins to the early eighteenth century, when Jean-François de Pontet began assembling vineyards north of Pauillac and later acquired land at Canet. The estate took the name Pontet-Canet in 1781 and was recognized as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

The vineyard covers 81 hectares in Pauillac, divided into roughly one hundred parcels overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its core plateau is formed by deep Garonne gravel over limestone, a well-drained setting particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, while cooler clay- and limestone-influenced parcels bring a different dimension to the estate’s Merlot.

Pontet-Canet began biodynamic trials in 2004 and converted the entire vineyard the following year, earning both organic and biodynamic certification in 2010. Workhorses have been used in the vines since 2008 to reduce soil compaction, reflecting an approach built around observation, soil health and allowing each parcel to express itself as clearly as possible.
