A single parcel of eighty-year-old vines on the Gevrey side of the Morey border, sitting right against Charmes-Chambertin. Jasper Morris gave the 2017 ninety-three points — a remarkable figure for a village wine, and a fair summary of why this tiny domaine has a quiet following.

🍷 At a Glance

• Grape: 100% Pinot Noir
• Appellation: Gevrey-Chambertin (village), lieu-dit Aux Echézeaux
• Region: Côte de Nuits, Burgundy
• Vintage: 2017
• Producer: Domaine Henri Jouan
• Winemaker: Philippe Jouan
• Vines: A single parcel of roughly 80-year-old Pinot Fin, adjoining Charmes-Chambertin
• Estate: Just three hectares across ten parcels, vines between 45 and 100 years old
• Vinification: Hand-picked and fully destemmed, short cuvaison of 12 to 14 days with gentle extraction, early malolactic to preserve freshness
• Ageing: François Frères barrels, 25 to 40% new depending on cuvée
• Serving temperature: 15–17°C
• Style: Dry red wine

👃 Tasting Notes & Experience

• Color: Medium-deep ruby
• Nose: Earthy and savoury over vibrant red fruit, with spice
• Palate: Deep and pure, carrying Gevrey's frame with a little of Morey's personality
• Structure: Suave tannins, well-focused
• Finish: Long and complex

This is a domaine almost nobody markets. Philippe Jouan took over in 2004, working three hectares his great-grandfather started buying while earning a living as a barrel-maker, and for roughly fifty years the family has sold much of its production directly to Joseph Drouhin in Beaune — a relationship they are proud of and still maintain, with a few barrels going that way each year. Philippe's own line on it is simply that he doesn't advertise because he has so few bottles to sell. The fruit is still pressed on a hundred-year-old wooden press. Aux Echézeaux is the parcel that keeps surprising critics: John Gilman notes that Jean-Marie Fourrier and Domaine Dujac own vines in the same lieu-dit.
