Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2019 – Tuscany’s Sangiovese Royalty

Tasting Notes — Real Talk, No Fluff

Color: Deep ruby-garnet — like old velvet meeting dark earth under Tuscan sun.
Nose: Red cherry, violet blossoms, a whiff of wild herbs and underbrush, fresh orange rind, a hint of dusty earth — inviting but with that hidden spine of mystery.
Palate: Medium-to-full body with pure Sangiovese energy — tart cherries, wild strawberry, crushed stone minerality, herbal spice and saline undercurrents. Tannins are firm but refined; acidity keeps everything vibrant, not heavy.
Finish: Long, elegant, mineral-tinged finish — dark fruit fades into spice, herbs, and a lingering “Tuscan hillside after rain” freshness. Salty, savory, and age-worthy.

Meet the Winemaker & Estate Vibes

Poggio di Sotto — a small-but-legendary estate in Castelnuovo dell’Abate (Montalcino), where vines live between 200–400 m asl on a mosaic of clay, sand, gravel and galestro.

For 2019, they hand-harvested grapes parcel by parcel at absolute peak ripeness, fermented in wooden vats and concrete, and aged 36 months in Slavonian oak. The result: a wine that marries raw Tuscan soul with polished finesse, built for decades of evolution.

Critic Reviews — The Experts Are Paying Attention

  • 98+ pts — Wine Advocate (Monica Larner): “A wine of enormous inner tension… punchy, lifted personality… brandied cherry, blackberry, underbrush, violet, herbs, mint and licorice… elegant tannins, brilliant acidity.”

  • 98+ pts — Jeb Dunnuck: Structured, long, with purity, dark fruit, wildflowers, wet stone, tea-leaf undertones, and a salty-orange finish — if cellared, it’ll only get better.

  • 96 pts — James Suckling: Sweet cherry and floral aromas, with orange peel and lilac, medium-bodied depth, fine tannins and attractive finish.

  • 95 pts — Decanter: Classic Brunello structure — dark fruit, spice, floral and earthy tones, polished balance, outstanding elegance.

  • 94 pts — Wine Spectator: Strawberry, cherry, rose and wild herb flavors, firm structure and elegant balance — with serious age-worthy bones.
