Musigny is widely held to be the most elegant expression of Pinot Noir anywhere, and Drouhin's parcel of it runs to about two-thirds of a hectare — roughly seven barrels in a generous year. This is the 2004, a cold and late vintage that was awkward in youth and has aged into something fresh, savoury and ready to drink.

👃 Tasting Notes & Experience

Color: Medium ruby, well into garnet
Nose: Red fruit and violet turning toward undergrowth and dried herb
Palate: Lively and fresh, lean in build rather than fleshy
Structure: Tannins that were leafy in youth and have refined considerably with time
Finish: Long and savoury, with a herbal lift

2004 was cold, wet and late, and the reds were not loved early on — a herbaceous, green streak ran through many of them, most often blamed on the ladybugs that came in with the fruit. Two decades later the picture has changed. In a 2022 retrospective, Sarah Marsh MW found the leafy tannins had refined surprisingly and most 2004s were still lively and fresh, with the vintage character receded far enough to let the terroir speak. Her verdict on top premier and grand cru bottles was that this is a good moment to drink them, ideally over a meal, and that the freshness and herbal edge make them unusually good with green-flavoured or tomato-based dishes. She also advised not waiting much longer. Treat this as a bottle for the table now rather than one for the cellar.
