Abadía Retuerta Pago Negralada 2016 – Iconic Single-Vineyard Tempranillo
The Grand Cru of Spanish Tempranillo
One Plot. One Grape. Infinite Depth.
From the gravelly, iron-rich soils of the Pago Negralada vineyard, Abadía Retuerta delivers its most iconic single-vineyard expression: a 100% Tempranillo aged like royalty and revered by collectors. This is Tempranillo at full throttle, guided by the precision of Ángel Anocíbar and the soul of one of Spain’s most storied estates.
The 2016 vintage was exceptional—long, even ripening, cool nights, and zero drama in the vineyard. Just grapes doing what they do best when left alone by nature and handled with monastic discipline.
👨🔬 The Winemaker & Estate
Ángel Anocíbar, Abadía Retuerta’s longtime head winemaker, is one of the few people in Spain with a doctorate in oenology and agronomy. He believes in letting each pago (single plot) speak for itself. At Negralada, he works with some of the oldest and lowest-yielding Tempranillo vines on the estate.
Abadía Retuerta itself sits on a 12th-century monastery and is a benchmark producer for terroir-driven wines in Castilla y León—just outside Ribera del Duero but playing in the same league.

“A muscular, age-worthy Tempranillo with tremendous structure, black fruit depth, and noble tannins. Classic and modern at once.”
🏅 94 Points – Wine Spectator
“Powerful and well-cut. Dark plum, espresso, graphite, and mineral unfold with each sip. Serious aging potential.”
🏅 Platinum Medal – Decanter World Wine Awards
“Focused, pure, and precise. A masterclass in single-vineyard Spanish red.”
