Remelluri

Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri sits above Labastida in Rioja Alavesa, on an old agricultural estate once linked to the Toloño monastery. The Rodríguez-Hernandorena family acquired the property in 1967 and began restoring its vineyards and buildings; the first vintage of the revived project followed in 1971.

Remelluri became one of Rioja’s early modern examples of an estate model built around growing, making and bottling wine from its own property. The vineyards lie beneath the Sierra de Toloño, spread between Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra, with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and other traditional varieties forming the core of the plantings.

The second generation of the family has continued to focus the project on the identity of the estate itself: old and younger vines, organic farming, restoration of the surrounding landscape and careful work in the cellar. Remelluri’s place in Rioja is therefore tied as much to the integrity of one historic property as to a particular style of wine.
