La Velona

La Velona is a Montalcino producer whose modern wine project began in the early 1990s in the La Velona area, between Castelnuovo dell’Abate and Monte Amiata Scalo. An estate interview published by Adega traced wine production to 1993 and the first Brunello vintage to 1998, with Sangiovese Grosso at the center of the estate’s work.

The La Velona name is tied to the historic Castello di Velona property overlooking the Val d’Orcia. The estate today describes a small, parcel-driven vineyard holding around the castle, with Brunello made entirely from Sangiovese grown in Montalcino.

Our La Velona shelf is a focused look at the 2010 vintage: the classic Brunello di Montalcino and the Riserva. Same producer, same year, two expressions — which makes this a very convenient little side-by-side experiment.
