Harlan Estate

Harlan Estate was founded in 1984 in the western hills of Oakville with a deliberately long horizon: H. William Harlan set out to create a California “First Growth” capable of standing alongside the great estates of Europe. The first commercial vintage was 1990, released only after years of vineyard development and experimentation.

The property spans 240 acres in the hills above the Oakville benchlands, with about 40 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyards climb from roughly 225 to 1,225 feet in elevation across volcanic and sedimentary soils, surrounded by forest and wild land that the estate considers integral to the character of the site.

Harlan’s identity is built around that tension between wild hillside landscape and meticulous cultivation: small vineyard blocks, steep exposures and a Cabernet-led blend intended to express the estate rather than a formula. The Maiden serves as the second selection, drawn from the same vineyard world and shaped by the same long-term philosophy.
