Banfi

Banfi was founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, who established the Castello Banfi estate in Montalcino with the ambition of combining tradition, research and careful vineyard stewardship in one of Tuscany’s most celebrated wine regions.

The estate expanded around the historic Castello di Poggio alle Mura, acquired in 1983, and developed a strong identity through extensive work in the vineyards and cellar. Banfi became particularly associated with Brunello di Montalcino and with research into Sangiovese, while its winemaking activity extends beyond Tuscany through a broader family of Italian wine projects.

In Montalcino, Banfi’s vineyards lie across a varied landscape of slopes, soils and microclimates surrounding the castle. This diversity, together with decades of viticultural study and parcel-focused work, remains central to the estate’s approach and to the character of its Tuscan wines.
