The domaine began with Alfred Cathiard, a Savoyard who came to Vosne-Romanée in the 1920s to work as a labourer at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and later at Lamarche. Three generations on, the family holds barely five hectares — including a 0.17-hectare parcel of Romanée-Saint-Vivant planted in 1919, which makes them the smallest owner in that grand cru. Sébastien has led the cellar since the 2011 vintage and has steadily reduced new oak in pursuit of a more transparent, terroir-driven style. The Malconsorts soil is the key: thin stony clay over hard limestone that drains fast and stresses the vines into small, intensely concentrated berries.
