A grand cru from the last years of Alain Hudelot's tenure — 2003 was the famous heatwave vintage, and these are wines of unusual richness and low acidity that have aged into something quite unlike a classic Burgundy. Seven bottles, now twenty-two years old.

👃 Tasting Notes & Experience

Color: Deep ruby moving well into garnet

Palate: Rich and broad, in the atypical register the heat of 2003 produced
Structure: Softer acidity than a classic Burgundy vintage, tannins now resolved
Finish: Warm and long

2003 brought a European heatwave that changed the shape of Burgundy's wines: picking began weeks early, sugar levels ran high and acidities fell. The results divided critics then and still do — some bottles are opulent and delicious, others have aged faster than the vintages around them. What is not in doubt is that this is a real grand cru parcel from a domaine of the first rank, made by Alain Hudelot in his final years before his grandson took over in 2008. Treat it as a wine to open now.
