This is the 2004, a cold and late vintage that was awkward in youth and has aged into something fresh, savoury and ready to drink.

🍷 At a Glance

• Grape: 100% Pinot Noir
• Appellation: Musigny Grand Cru, Chambolle-Musigny
• Region: Côte de Nuits, Burgundy
• Vintage: 2004
• Producer: Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in Beaune in 1880 and still family-owned
• Holding: Around 0.67 hectares of Musigny — about seven barrels in a good year
• Farming: Organic viticulture since the late 1980s and biodynamic practices from the 1990s, across the whole estate
• Serving temperature: 15–17°C
• Style: Dry red wine

👃 Tasting Notes & Experience

• Color: Medium ruby, well into garnet
• Nose: Red fruit and violet turning toward undergrowth and dried herb
• Palate: Lively and fresh, lean in build rather than fleshy
• Structure: Tannins that were leafy in youth and have refined considerably with time
• Finish: Long and savoury, with a herbal lift

2004 was cold, wet and late, and the reds were not loved early on — a herbaceous, green streak ran through many of them, most often blamed on the ladybugs that came in with the fruit. Two decades later the picture has changed. In a 2022 retrospective, Sarah Marsh MW found the leafy tannins had refined surprisingly and most 2004s were still lively and fresh, with the vintage character receded far enough to let the terroir speak. Her verdict on top premier and grand cru bottles was that this is a good moment to drink them, ideally over a meal, and that the freshness and herbal edge make them unusually good with green-flavoured or tomato-based dishes. She also advised not waiting much longer. Treat this as a bottle for the table now rather than one for the cellar.

❤️ Why We Love It

• A Grand Cru parcel of under three-quarters of a hectare, from one of Burgundy's great family houses
• Organic and biodynamic farming across 100 hectares, decades before it was fashionable
• A vintage that has quietly come good, at the right moment to open it

🍽️ Food Pairing Ideas

• Roast poultry and game birds
• Tomato-based dishes and green-flavoured vegetarian cooking
• Mushrooms, truffle and soft washed-rind cheeses

👤 Who This Wine Is For

✓ Drinkers who want a mature Grand Cru to open now, with food
✓ Anyone who enjoys savoury, herb-inflected, lean-framed Burgundy
✕ Not a bottle to cellar further, and not for those who dislike a herbal edge

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/1739/2436/files/maison-joseph-drouhin-musigny-grand-cru-2004-clean_75c1b708-c7da-4da2-806d-792e83d4b092.png?v=1787769613
