Because the clos is small and the walls are tall, they block the cooling winds and bounce the sun's heat back onto the vines — a microclimate that ripens early and gives slightly lower acidity, yet still yields a wine with elegance and the structure to age. The soil is a clayey limestone with white marl, noticeably different from the redder, lower ground of Clos de la Bousse d'Or immediately to the north; the two may once have been a single vineyard, and nobody is quite sure when or why the dividing wall went up. Mark O'Connell bought the old Boillot estate in 2010 with Pierre Meurgey and Philippe Remoissenet and made the first vintage in 2011. 2016 was the frost year: an April freeze devastated Volnay, Pommard and Beaune, and what survived came in tiny quantities and unusual concentration.

❤️ Why We Love It

• A genuine monopole of barely half a hectare, with fifty-year-old vines
• A walled microclimate you can taste — early-ripening warmth held in an elegant frame
• A frost vintage, from a domaine making about 1,500 cases across its whole range

🍽️ Food Pairing Ideas

• Lamb shank or fillet of duckling
• Sweetbreads with morels
• Triple-cream cheeses such as Brillat-Savarin or Chaource

👤 Who This Wine Is For

✓ Drinkers who want classic Volnay elegance with real provenance behind it
✓ Anyone collecting monopoles
✕ Not ideal if you want weight and power over finesse

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/1739/2436/files/domaine-clos-de-la-chapelle-volnay-premier-cru-clos-de-la-chapelle-monopole-burgundy-france.png?v=1785900570
https://www.inbodega.com/products/domaine-clos-de-la-chapelle-volnay-premier-cru-clos-de-la-chapelle-monopole-2016-burgundy-france
