Two decades later the picture has changed. In a 2022 retrospective, Sarah Marsh MW found the leafy tannins had refined surprisingly and most 2004s were still lively and fresh, with the vintage character receded far enough to let the terroir speak. Her verdict on top premier and grand cru bottles was that this is a good moment to drink them, ideally over a meal, and that the freshness and herbal edge make them unusually good with green-flavoured or tomato-based dishes. She also advised not waiting much longer.
